Which documents do I need?
Argentine people must have D.N.I., L.E., L.C. or C.I. Foreign tourists must have a passport showing identity and nationality. With this document they can stay in Argentina for a maximum period of 90 days, depending on the home country. In some cases it is necessary to show a visa.
When tourists are underage and are not accompanied by their parents, they are required their parent's or parents' written consent, duly certified by the corresponding authorities in their home country (original and copy).
It is important to remember that there is a strict control as to carrying perishables goods (meat, sausages, fruit and vegetable), as there is a sanitary inspection. On the other hand, if you wish to travel with pets, you must show a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and validated by SENASA (National Animal Sanitary Service).
Which clothes should I carry?
If you are thinking of preparing your luggage, beyond personal taste and uses, it is advisable to include a thick jacket, a raincoat, a thick sweater, trainers and/or boots. You may also consider taking an umbrella, though local people do not often use one.
Which is the monetary system?
The currency unit is peso argentino. There are coins of $0.05, $0.10, $0.25, $0.50, $1 and bills of $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
How do I exchange money?
The most acceptable currency by local banks is the United States dollar. It is very difficult to change other currency units. Exchange bureaus accept dollars, pesetas and French francs, among other currencies. In the case of traveler's checks, a commission of 2% to 5% is charged independent of the amount exchanged. There may be delays or problems when changing traveler's checks that are not specified in American dollars.
There are also cash machines/ATMs from which you can get cash using your four-number PIN. Consult your local bank before travelling.
In each case, do not forget to check in advance the exchange rate and the commission charged. The same applies to payment with credit cards, as some shops may add up to 10% to prices.
How do telephones work?
Public telephones are available in many places. Some of them work with coins (from $ 0.25 to $1), some with phone cards (available in many local shops) and some with both. You cannot get telephone cards in phone booths, but if needed you can call free for assistance (dial 110). If you need to make a phone call from your hotel room it is recommended to check the cost of the call first, as there is generally an additional cost for this service.
To make an international phone call with reversed charge, you can get advice at the Tourist Office (Ushuaia City Hall).
What do I do in case of emergency?
Call 101 from any telephone to ask for the fire brigade, the police or an ambulance, according to the type of emergency. At the phone booths you will find a list of the most important phone numbers which are free of charge.
Transfer from the airport to the city center
When arriving at the local airport, you can get advice at the Tourist Office (Ushuaia City Hall). There is no bus service to the city, so you will have to take a taxi or a chauffeur driven-car, and you can consult fares before taking it. The approximate rate to the city center is $5.00. Should any problem arise, it is advisable to take note of the vehicle identification number. Anyway, it is most likely that you have made the travel arrangements with a reliable tourist agency beforehand, so that you will be picked up at the airport.
