USHUAIA - TIERRA DEL FUEGO
USEFUL INFORMATION
Tierra del Fuego and its capital Ushuaia, are the southernmost region and city in the world. This is a land full of stories and legends of conquerors and adventurers. Besides, it boasts the marvelous sensation of inhabiting the end of the world in an area where glaciers, forests, mountains and sea meet.
The term "Ushuaia" comes from the Yámana language, which was spoken by old indian tribes that inhabited this region thousand hundreds of years ago, on both sides of the Beagle Channel up to the Cape Horn, and were known as the "Beagle canoeists".
An approximate meaning of the word would be "Bay penetrating into the west", or "Bay which tends to penetrate into the west".
Ushuaia is located at latitude 54.8º South and 68.3º West of Greenwich meridian. It is the capital city of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Isles.
It has a population of 53,800 inhabitants, covering an area of 9,017 km2, including De los Estados Island and the Beagle Channel Isles. The shore of the Beagle Channel and the Martial range are the natural frame of the city of Ushuaia. This mountain range runs parallel to the bay coast. Its slope starts almost at the same coast, so, as the city goes upwards, it turns into a great amphitheater which outlines a wide arch stretching eastward.
Beyond the city, up to the channel, almost at its end, there are majestic mounts standing out against the horizon, such as Mt Olivia and Mt Cinco Hermanos of 1,318 and 1,280 m high, respectively.
Due to Ushuaia's changing weather, the traveler must not forget to bring warm and waterproof clothes as well as rubber shoes or boots.
In order to make a better choice of the tourist circuits, it should be remembered that the Northern area is covered with steppes, the Central area with hills, forests and lakes, and the Southern area with mountains and forests.
During the summer, you can carry out activities such as trekking, horse-riding, mountain biking, sport-fishing and the most wonderful trips through the Beagle Channel and even to the Argentinean Antarctic. At this time of the year, it is common to see cruise-liners arriving at the Ushuaia harbor with many tourists eager to visit all of these outstanding attractions.
In winter, the snow-covered landscape changes the appearance of the city: however, days usually remain clear and bright. There are several winter centers to practice alpine and cross skiing.
