ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT OF PATAGONIA

The southernmost region of the planet still reveals itself as an unknown place to most of us. The beauty of its landscape and the fairness of its inhabitants underline a territory we can only behold in admiration, but regrettably, also with concern. It is not a matter of concerning about beauty, as it will never be the case, but we have to worry when beauty runs the risk of vanishing, and along with it, a part of our biological and cultural richness.

It has become a necessity to give a little time to analyze the present state of those fragile ecosystems to reach a better understanding of the problems it is facing. The climatic changes, mainly caused by mankind's activities, along with the constant pollution of our environment, had generated such a negative impact that at the present days it seems to be absolutely out of control. Fortunately, we are still on time to slow down the destructive behaviour we have been putting our home planet into. We must become conscious of the fact that while polluting our environment we are destroying our home, that with the destruction of a forest we could be also obliterating the cure to several diseases. We are preventing our children from knowing the world as it is in the present days.

These series of scientific articles have been written in order of bringing you some trustful information about the present situation of our world, about what we are doing to it and about what we should be doing. As a tourism promoting organisation, we are compelled to encourage the respect for those magical places that generate life, thanks to which the natural balance of Earth is sustained, and to which once and for all we must learn to protect.

Garbage Dump of the Ships - Part One
Have the seas been transformed into the great dump of modern world? Find the reality of the marine environment in this report that reveals how, in our way to modernisation we could instead be heading towards the utter destruction of life in our oceans.

Garbage Dump of the Ships - Part Two
This article will let us know about the environmental impact caused by some common use products and the time they will take to biodegrade. Regretfully, some of them will never disappear from our seas, their hideous polluting effects lasting forever.

Garbage Dump of the Ships - Part Three
This study completes this series of articles concerning the present state of the oceans. This time we will have a look upon the entertainment industry and how cruisers could not only be offering fun but contamination as well.

Green Bonus
During the intense struggle that scientists from all around the world are keeping to contain pollution, the conclusion attained was that those countries with no major contamination standards and also containing large green areas within their territories, could provide a precious help in order of seizing those gases (as carbon compounds) that are harmful to our environment but which are persistently produced by and large by the most industrialised countries. This alternative could bring important benefits not only to those underdeveloped countries but to mankind itself.

When the Giants Fall
A call of attention about the alarming state of the glaciers of the Argentinean Patagonia. It is another claim about the way man has been treating the environment, endangering our world and the delicate ecosystems it shelters. This report will show you the forthcoming consequences resulting from our blindfold disregard to the constant signals for help our planet is giving to us.

The Climate Change is Global
According to the most renowned scientists of the world, the average temperature of the surface of the planet has increased approximately in 0.6° C during the past century. It actually does not seem to be a great number, nevertheless, if we keep the same pace, the ecosystems of the world would not have enough time for adapting to the new temperatures, which will bring unprecedented climatologic catastrophes.

Invader Species
In these times of globalisation, the want of men for travelling the world is very powerful, allowing us to break through the frontiers that once kept us apart. Nevertheless, what could have been a great advantage to men, has actually brought a new hazard to our environment. Animal or vegetal creatures from any geographical area are transported by chance to other places whose ecosystems are powerless to cope with their new guests.

Exotic Species
Sometimes, the search for economic welfare by some countries comes along with the introduction of new species (animals or plants) into their territories. These foreign species, when introduced into a environment different than their primary one could, instead of becoming an asset, turn out into a major problem to their new Country land. A problem that will demand millions of dollars spend to control what would actually became an outbreak. In this article you will find a thorough analysis concerning the risks involving the careless introduction of exotic species to new environments.

Hell in the Patagonia
The all-knowing nature has been in charge of maintaining the pace of the natural processes that rule our planet, nevertheless, sometimes it becomes necessary that man lends a hand in order of keeping those processes from altering the environment. This is the case of natural fires in the forests of the Patagonia, where the guarding hand of man has an important function regarding the protection of this region.

The Roots with no Land
A seemingly never ending problem, a Nation that seems to be unable to recover its homelands, a glance to the Mapuche situation, the "Homeless People".

Not All that Shines is Gold
Must we stand as unmoved witnesses to the progressive poisoning of our planet? The development of any economical activity attempting against our environment is a crime. This is the only possible way we should regard it. This article tries to alert us about the devastating effects the unrestricted development of mining activities in the Cordón Esquel deposits could bring.

Marine and Coastal Birds
An approaching sight to the natural richness of the Valdés Peninsula, one of the most diverse places within the Patagonia coast. Through this complete report you would be able to know a little more about the present state of this shelter of life.

When the Sands Advance
The negative impact brought by the economical activities of man has generated serious damage to the Patagonian region. Deserts keep dangerously retrieving new territories, banning from them the life forms that used to dwell within these lands.

Futureless Oceans
The growth of population within coastal areas, the over exploitation of natural species and the constant pollution of our seas had raised a worrisome care for what appears to be an unwanted future.

Contamination by Hydrocarbons and Metals in the Coastal Area of the Patagonia
The search for an equilibrium between the preservation of our environment and the economical activities is the restless search we must all aim to. Only an adequate and respectful handling of our natural resources will guarantee the continuity of life in such places as the coasts of Patagonia.
