PUERTO MADRYN
THE CITY
One of the visual features presented by Puerto Madryn to its visitors when they start exploring its streets is the great diversity of architectural styles, a product of the different origins of the waves of immigrants arriving in the area.
The late 19th century style, featuring a central gallery, used the building materials brought by sea from Europe: wood and steel sheeting.
Some years later, in the second decade of the following century, the arrival of new immigrants brought new customs and building styles. The façade or frontispiece becomes important as a separation between the street and the inner rooms.
The main building material is now already brickwork, and steel roofs continue to be used. Some elements of neo-classical architecture now begin to appear. Good examples are the "Antiguo Hotel" (28 de Julio 147) and the "Casa de la Cultura" (Roque Sáenz Peña 86).
After the second world war, when a new wave of immigrants arrives, reinforced concrete technology is introduced and ornamentation disappears.
The "North American" lifestyle gains popularity. Sitting rooms and garages appear. This kind of building is found on España, Alvear, Estivariz and Gobernador Maíz streets.
ALONG THE CITY STREETS
To make the best use of one's time when exploring the downtown area of Puerto Madryn it is important that the city tour begins on Boulevard Marítimo Almirante Brown.
Facing Avenida Gales we find the monument to Liberator Don José de San Martín, at the foot of which lie the propeller and other items pertaining to the "Transporte Villarino", the ship that brought his remains back to Argentina in 1880.
In the seventies, the members of the "Hermandad del Escrófalo", in an amazingly risky operation, rescued these items that are exhibited here today from the sea bottom.
Here also, we will find the Monument to the Tehuelche Indian, by the sculptor Perlotti, that depicts one of the original inhabitants of this region. From this point one can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city, its beaches and the industrial and fishing sectors.
Nearby lies the Monument to the Welsh "Saga", created by the architect Estanislao Boris and the sculptor Luis Perlotti, for the centenary of the city's foundation.
During his stroll, the traveler can stop at one of the many gastronomy establishments where he can sample different typical local dishes prepared with shellfish, other seafood or the much-prized Patagonian mutton.
Alongside the Monument to the Tehuelche Indian is a gravel track leading to Lobería Punta Loma, the beaches away from the city, and the modern Ecocentro (Ecology Center), Argentina's first information center on the marine ecosystem that, in an original offer, combines science with education and the arts.
Its exhibit, the only one of its kind in the 3,000 kilometers of Patagonian coastline, and the different activities that take place there, offer key information to unlock the secrets of nature.
The seafront building is the hub and starting point of all the activities: a haven of relaxation, it invites visitors to absorb all the wisdom nature offers the human spirit.
The Eco-center is open all year round. Responding to tourist inflow to the area, it operates with several timetables.
The Eco-center offers transport, stopping at the following points in the city:
- Secretaría de Turismo (Tourism Office).
- Hotel Península Valdés.
- Hotel Tolosa.
- Hotel Playa.
- Hotel Bahía Nueva.
- Apart Hotel Villa Pirén.
- Hostal del Rey.
- Hotel Costanera.
If you are interested in architectural styles, you should visit:
The Railway Station
This building was built in 1889 as the Patagonian Railway Station. It operated until 1961 and 33 years later was totally recycled, although it maintains its original structure. Currently, the bus terminus operates here.
Casa Toschke
It was founded in 1921 by José Toschke, a German schoolteacher that settled in the area. This building housed the city's first boarding school.
Compañía Mercantil del Chubut (Chubut Trading Company)
This building was originally the headquarters of the Chubut Trading Company, an important organization with branches all over Patagonia, and its own fleet of vessels to transport merchandise from Europe to Buenos Aires. Currently a factory of scuba diving suits and gear occupies this building.
Chalet Pujol -Science Museum
This building was raised in 1917 by the Spanish businessman Agustín Pujol, who was mayor of Puerto Madryn from 1916 to 1917. Many years later, it was donated by his descendants to the provincial government, that turned it into the headquarters of the Provincial Oceanographic and Natural Science Museum.
It is located at the intersection of Domeq García and José Menéndez streets.
Stepping into this neo-classical building is like entering the early 20th century.
A detail of its architecture that attracts all visitors is its spiral staircase with hand-carved solid stone steps embedded in the inner walls of the tower stairwell.
Once you are inside you can visit several different display rooms.
The Welsh Room contains historical and photographic items on the Welsh colonization of Chubut. It is a showcase of the daily routines and national customs of the early Welsh settlers.
Another room lodges the Fish and Invertebrates exhibit, including specimens of the main species inhabiting Puerto Madryn coasts. A great attention draw is the beautiful "Moon Fish" that was found on the beach in 1984.
There is also an important collection of crustaceans, mollusks and echinoderms, featuring a giant female squid found in 1996.
In the Marine Mammals and Birds Room you will see the varied fauna populating this territory. The central exhibit is a beautiful stuffed walrus, surrounded by glass display cases showing the natural habitats of the avian species.
Another, no less important room is that of the Whales. Here you will find skeletons and texts that detail the development of each group, its main features and behavior.
In the Geology Room, there is a richly appointed collection of rocks and mineral ores, as well as an educational section dedicated to paleontology that displays a fragment of herbivorous sauropod femur from the Lower Cretaceous Period (90 million years ago).
Finally, we have the Botanical Room, where fancy species belonging to the terrestrial and marine flora of the area can be viewed.
In addition to hearing excellent explanations by staff members, visitors can enjoy watching slide shows in the projection room that will both satisfy and awaken their curiosity.
Museum of Modern Art
This is at Avenida Roca Nº 444, and has an important cultural and social role in Puerto Madryn city life. Artists of all kinds are able to exhibit their best works in a favorable environment here.
Inside the Museum, its four main walls are decked with paintings, sculptures, engravings, photos and portraits in a variety of styles, by artists of the importance of Pérez Celis, Quinquela Martín and Marino Santamarina, as well as regional and local artists.
The museum also offers well-attended annual painting, photography and wood-carving courses.
The Old Wharf
Although a few years ago it was renamed "Comandante Luis Piedrabuena", locals still know it as the "Muelle Viejo" (Old Wharf), because it was built in 1910. It is an item pertaining to the city's "historical heritage". For forty years it was the entry and exit point for people, production and raw materials.
Almirante Storni Wharf
The General Ports Administration began construction of this important project in April 1972 as a key item in the city's social and economic development: only a few kilometers away lies the "ALUAR" aluminum plant, a strategic industry that uses raw aluminum imported from Australia in enormous ore carriers.
This firm has set up a giant unloading crane and a conveyor belt enabling the transfer of ore from carrier holds to the plant's silos.
From here also, shipments of wool, fishery products, fruit and other items are shipped abroad.
RELAXATION
If the traveler is in need of a refreshing rest after wandering the streets of Puerto Madryn, he should not hesitate to enjoy a refreshing rest on any of the city beaches he may find himself near. They all offer complete facilities and varied options to dive in the ocean seeking adventure.
Other places that you may find interesting are:
El Doradillo Beach
This is 17 kilometers north of the city, along a gravel track. You can also get there on a specially designed Mountain Bike circuit of 28 kilometers.
It occupies a small bay and is the favorite beach of the local inhabitants because of sand quality and water transparency. From its shores, from June through December, one can watch the slow movements of whales in the open sea.
Punta Cuevas Area
From this place one can obtain the best panoramic view of the city and the gulf, both by day and by night. It takes its name from the deep caves that are seen along the beach at low tide. These caves are the remnants of those that served as shelters for the first Welsh colonists in this area.
SERVICES
Puerto Madryn is a modern city possessing a large and high-quality hotel and gastronomy infrastructure. Other attractions, such as the local museums, theaters and cinemas draw thousands of people to this city on weekends.
The business center is the place to go if you wish to buy regional food products such as alfajores (sweet, filled biscuits), chocolates, Welsh cake and tinned shellfish, and also to buy T-shirts and sweatshirts of every conceivable kind, many bearing ecological messages on the regional fauna.
Local crafts include hand-woven textiles from primitive looms, using hand-spun wool and natural dyes obtained from seaweed and local shrubs; craft pottery items and silverwork with Mapuche Indian motifs.
Finally, if you want to enjoy Madryn nightlife, you can choose from a casino, pubs, restaurants and discotheques that mushroom along the seafront and the main street, Avenida Roca.
