PATAGONIA'S NATIONAL MONUMENTS
Areas containing wild animals, aesthetically, historically or scientifically interesting plants, which are granted absolute protection. They are inviolable, and no activity of any kind is authorized there, except for official inspections, duly permitted scientific research and those activities necessary for their care and the assistance to visitors.
Petrified Forest NM (Santa Cruz)
Lost in the immensity of the Patagonian steppe are the petrified remains of huge trees, the vegetation of millions of years ago. 1954; 61,228 ha. Soon to be enlarged.
ANIMAL SPECIES DECLARED NATURAL MONUMENTS
Southern Andean Deer - Huemul
A medium sized deer native to Andean Patagonia. Its trusting nature and uncontrolled hunting have brought it to the verge of extinction.
Declared a Natural Monument in 1996.
Southern Right Whale
Historically one of the most persecuted whales, at present its population is slowly recovering. Every year it arrives in Patagonia's bays to calve and breed in increasing numbers.
Declared a Natural Monument in 1984.
Northern Andean Deer - Taruca
A stocky deer from the high mountain pastures of NW Argentina. Its populations are isolated on scattered high mountain peaks, which are unprotected.
Declared a Natural Monument in 1996.
Jaguar
The largest land predator of South America is being ever more restricted in its range; for this reason it is now protected throughout the country.
Declared a Natural Monument in 2001.
PATAGONIA'S NATIONAL RESERVES
Areas protected in order to preserve their ecological systems. It may also happen that a Reserve becomes a protected area of a neighboring National Park, that is an independent conservation area that does not meet all the necessary requirements to become a National Park.
