CALAFATEEl Calafate celebrates its local festivity on February 15th, commemorating the foundation of Lake Argentino. The best motifs of this event remain in the crafts typical of the area, available in the many stores in Av. Libertador San Martín, between 9 de Julio and 25 de Mayo streets. CURRENCY The "Peso" is the official currency in Argentina. If you are planning to exchange foreign currency, withdraw money or other banking operations, remember to do so in El Calafate. Foreign tourist are very common in the area, so in general American dollars are accepted without problem. Several stores also accept traveler's checks as well as credit cards.

COMMUNICATIONS There are telephoning facilities ran by two private companies, offering International and National communications, fax services and Internet. As regards telephone booths, they accept Argentine coins. Cellular phone services and Internet available only in El Calafate for the time being.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE There is a Public Hospital in El Calafate offering qualified services in General Practice, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Traumatology, Cardiology, General Surgery, Anesthesiology; plus ambulance service and access to air transfers. There are also several specialized private practice bureaus. There is a Sanitary post in El Chaltén rendering emergency services only.
