TORRES DEL PAINE
PUERTO NATALES
CITY ATTRACTIONS
Puerto Natales is basically a great logistic base to organize excursions to Torres del Paine National Park, providing accommodations, transport, food, equipment purchase, etc.
If you have extra time available, it is worth visiting the peaceful streets of this picturesque town.
Along Manuel Bulnes, one of the main streets in town, tourists can find restaurants, hotels, banks and supermarkets.
On Puerto Montt promenade we find the port, arrival and departure point for the ferry to Puerto Montt as well as the tourist transatlantic ships going to Antarctica and the fjords and channels of the Chilean Patagonia.
One may appreciate a great number of aquatic birds and enjoy the beautiful sight of Ultima Esperanza inlet and Antonia Varas peninsula.
Towards the north, one can distinctly observe the Serrano and Balmaceda glaciers, belonging to Bernardo O'Higgins National Park.
One can also walk along Phillipi street, where one will find a mural telling the story of the Kaweshkar and Aonikenk ethnic groups, who lived between the sea and the pampas until the end of the XIX century.
Puerto Natales Square
Ornamented with strong and delicate pines, the big and beautiful main square Arturo Pratt is located in the city center. Opposite the square, is the beautiful parish church of harmonious architecture and the city Town Hall, a building of historical significance, representative of British architecture from the beginnings of the XX century. This one-hectare site is the city's main green area and an excellent spot for photography due to its ample space and beautiful surroundings.
Puerto Natales Historical Museum
The museum features different subjects organized in thematic rooms: World and Primitive Environments Room, Colonization Room, Rural Life Room, Life and Urban Activities Room and Chilean "Carabineros" Room. Bulnes 285.
"Alberto de Agostini" Salesian Museum
Featuring an interesting display of the local flora and fauna, it belongs to the Salesian School. Padre Rosa 1456.
Dorotea Vantage Point
11 km south of Puerto Natales, along Route 9. The walk takes two hours and ends at the vantage point, from where tourists can observe the landscape that surrounds the city. It is located in parcel Nº 14 belonging to the Saavedra-Uribe family.
Bories Port
It is a great industrial complex founded in 1913 by "Sociedad Explotadora Tierra del Fuego" in order to process the production of its three ranches in the area. Today, it only works as a slaughterhouse and meat processing plant. The facilities are absolutely impressive: freezing chambers, fat processing plant, tannery, meat preservation and wool- washing. It was declared Historical Monument in 1996.
EXCURSIONS
Cerro Castillo Town
Cerro Castillo, the main village in the Torres del Paine area, emerged around the ranch founded in 1906 by the "Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego". It is 57 km north-west of Puerto Natales, along Route 9. Its 400 inhabitants are devoted mainly to cattle raising activities.
Most of its buildings date from the beginnings of the century and were part of the former Estancia Cerro Castillo, considered to be the most extensive in the continental part of the Chilean Magallanes and Antarctica area.
During spring and summer, traditionally cultural events take place, such as shearing, rodeo, typical Chilean races, taming of stallions, etc.
Some of the most interesting places to visit in Villa Cerro Castillo include:
Cerro Castillo cemetery, where the first colonizers were buried at the beginnings of the century, 2 km from the village.
La Gruta, a small cavern with an image of St Teresa de los Andes, in Estancia Anahí del Valle.
Escondida Lagoon, small and beautiful, surrounded by trees, the only way to get there is on horseback (Estancia Anahí del Valle).
Condors Vantage Point, geological fault that serves as nest for these birds, which can be watched from a plain in the hill only 20 meters away (Estancia Anahí del Valle).
It should be mentioned that, in order to visit any of the previously mentioned places, it is essential to contact the ranch owners since theses attractions are situated in their lands.
