A classic when it comes to recreation at this beach resort in Río Negro. There are several places to feel the excitement of overcoming steep dunes or difficult lands.
Many motorbikers choose the coasts of Negro river for this activity, only in some permitted spaces within the protected area of Paso Córdoba.
Bariloche Adventure Travel & Tours...
Fourtrax excursions are very popular in San Carlos de Bariloche. The roads starting in the city outskirts take travelers on a ride through timeless scenic wonders on an immense scale, while tacitly demanding they commit toward the preservation of the ecological environment.
To practice this sport, visitors can rent a light truck at the base of Mt Catedral and start a journey clinging to the sides of the precipitous mountain and touching the intensely blue sky.
This ideal family excursion covers the surrounding woods, skirting the Casa de Piedra stream. After two hours of delighting in the immensity of the landscape, you end your trip at the calmly enigmatic Lake Moreno.
The traveler is fitted out with a helmet and gloves and, if the weather warrants, a raincoat. This circuit may also be covered in winter, the snow adding a spectacular touch.
It is a highly recommended excursion for people fond of nature and motor sports.
Calafate Adventure Travel & Tours...
For those who dare travel through places where no motorized vehicle has ever been before, 4 x 4 vehicles take you to the most marvelous landscapes.
Puerto Madryn Adventure Travel & Tours...
In Patagonia, few places offer as many alternatives as Chubut for fans of cross-country four-wheel range-roving. Water, sand, snow, ice, mud, gravel and rocks make up a plethora of obstacles that test the resistance of vehicles and the skill of their drivers.
Thus, the offer ranges from dizzying Cordillera challenges to the quicksand areas on the sea coast and the wild coastal plateaus.
Whether you hire an excursion as a passenger or help out as a co-pilot, or you prefer to use your own vehicle, a maze of highways and tracks await you in this most exciting of vehicle sports.
You have the following options:
Cerro Avanzado 4x4
This is an excursion on the outskirts of Puerto Madryn. You leave the hotel and head for the Patagonian desert. There is a stop off at one point to take a short walk and see vegetation and fossils.
Then you go into the coastal area to do a medium-difficulty interpreted
range-roving track, which guarantees excitement.
Finally, you will get to Cerro Avanzado to examine fossil remains, climb to the highest point on the coast, and descend through fantastic scenery facing Punta Loma.
The excursion can also be an excellent excuse to have lunch at Estancia San Guillermo, where a country meal of salads, chicken and grilled mutton awaits you.
The estancia owners, together with their staff, wait to host the group with maté and tortas fritas (fried buns). After lunch you will be invited to watch some sheep shearing.
Estimated length: 2 hours.
Distance: 40-60 km approx. (all on gravel track).
Punta Ninfas 4x4
Ninety kilometers southeast of Puerto Madryn lies one of the points that form the entrance "mouth" of Golfo Nuevo. This is one of the area's most impressive landscape viewing vantage points.
From here, one can view the place where the gulf meets the ocean, the effect of the incoming and outgoing tides, the closest point of Valdés Peninsula (Morro Nuevo), and the majesty of the Argentine Sea.
Then, after traveling along the El Pedral beaches, there is a stop for a guided excursion to collect marine fossils.
Once at Punta Ninfas, one can view the lighthouse and the beaches (in "whale season" one can see the mothers and young entering and leaving the bay).
From September through December (mating season), and from January through April (molting season), the Punta Ninfas beaches are taken over by hundreds of walrus.
This excursion requires optimal fitness, and is not for those who suffer from vertigo or heart and respiratory problems.
The outstanding feature of this excursion is a feeling that one is alone in a privileged and exclusive encounter with nature.
The return to Puerto Madryn is made along the same road.
Estimated length: 4/5 hours.
Distance: 180 to 200 km approx. (on a gravel track).
El Doradillo Beach Classic 4x4
This excursion presents an impressive picture: that of a group of mother whales with their young gamboling near the beach in waters of unusual depth, calmness and clarity (thanks to the steeply sloping shore).
You have a 95% chance of finding these animals only 20 or 30 meters from the shore.
The times for this excursion are set by the high tide, at which moment the whales approach the shoreline.
There are also special excursions that visit the Cantera and Punta Ameghino beaches that are not frequently visited.
Estimated length: 2 hours.
Distance: 40 to 60 km approx. (on a gravel track).
Observation: this excursion requires at least two participants.
4 x 4 IN SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES
San Martin de los Andes Adventure Travel & Tours...
You can enjoy this experience in organized excursions on four-wheel-drive vehicles along diverse routes. In these outings, you will be able to visit wonderful and almost inaccessible places. The trips can be combined with horseriding or cycling, photography and fishing.
Detour to Lake Escondido
The journey on 4 X 4 starts on the "Route of the Seven Lakes". After five kilometers there is a turning toward Quila Quina ("three points" in Mapuche language). Before concluding the descent to the village, there is a track on the left in one of the sharp bends of the wood.
After a while, there is a wooden bridge, a steep climb, a gate and finally, the same river has to be crossed again but this time there is no bridge. Next, the ascent to Llao Llao is faced and, having completed the most challenging part in the journey, you will find yourself in front of Lake Escondido.

At this point, one goes down along the old road until reaching the small hotel "Hostería Petrel", from where the tour follows toward the "Aserradero Bronzovich" (a sawmill) in order to take secondary roads which, after some kilometers, turn into paths of difficult access up to the shore of Lake Fagnano. Once there, one travels off road for about 10 kilometers along the lake's shore, alternatively fording it or taking narrow paths through the woods. The tour goes on along Bombilla Lagoon, then back to the woods and finally returning to National Route Nº 3 to get back to Ushuaia. Duration: 1 day.
The afternoon is the best time to see the beavers. The tour leaves from Ushuaia toward the Andorra Valley. Some kilometers are covered off road to finally reach a wooden area where several beaver spots can be found.
