CANOEING - ROWING - KAYAKING IN PATAGONIA
Rapids, difficult nooks, extensive water courses. Ideal conditions
for those who like to feel the adrenaline of letting themselves go
by the strength of the current or fighting against it. Kayaking is
a very popular sport in Patagonia. This is where the longest boat
race in the world is held and some of the country's best rowers have
been born.
Recommended places
Negro river
It is along this water course, the greatest in Patagonia, that the
longest kayak race in the world is held. Anyway, you do not need to
compete to sail its waters. Anybody, along its course, between Neuquén
and Viedma, can "throw" the paddles to soar or let himself go with
the current.
Aluminé
The Ruca Choroi and Aluminé rivers provide strong rapids, with nooks
for the most daring only. Those who want to experience the adventure
of a ride on a kayak for the first time also have their place here:
excursions with guide and basic equipment are offered.
Puerto Deseado: Deseado Estuary
A stretch of sea that enters 40 kilometers along a river. Some people
say it is one of the most beautiful natural formations in America.
Apart from Trekking and sailing sports, the star sport is, without
any doubt, kayaking.
Dique Ameghino, 140 kilometers from Trelew
Green waters framed by irregular reddish hills are the natural scenario
for rafting and rowing.

IN BARILOCHE
Bariloche
Adventure Travel & Tours...
Patagonia
possesses fabulous rivers that are always ready to host the eager
kayaker. This addictive sport finds its ideal framework in Bariloche,
where the beauty of the wilderness, wildflowers and seasonally changing
hues of the forest provide extra delights.
The adventures offered by this discipline and its excursions enable
the living of this wonderful natural environment to the full. The
rivers are of varying difficulty levels, each of them having a definite
personality and harboring its hidden secrets.
You can rent canoes or kayaks on the Nahuel Huapi lakeside jetties.
There are different organized excursions with itineraries for all
levels of expertise in the rivers and lakes of the area, while enjoying
spectacular scenery.
The rivers where this sport is practiced are:
Manso
FromVillegas to Primera Pasarela (First Footbridge). Navigable year-round
with rapids up to class 2.
Foyel and Manso
Offers class 3 and 4 rapids. These rivers take you to the Argentine-Chilean
border.
You can also get to inaccessible areas by making kayaking trips on
lake Nahuel Huapi.
As well as the excursions, courses are given for beginners and advanced
kayakers on:
- Limay River (class II)
- Foyel River (class II)
- Traful River (class III)
- Manso Inferior River (class II - III)
- Manso Medio River (class III - IV)
- Villegas River (class IV)
- Manso River - Los Alerces Cascade (class V)
RAFTING
This
consists of navigating mountain watercourses downstream in inflatable
boats. It is therefore practiced only in the places where conditions
are right. Obviously, every river is different, so we have an enormous
choice of rivers to raft on, each with its own special attractions
and difficulty level.
In Argentina the international scale of navigation difficulty is used,
grading the rivers in order of increasing difficulty from I to VI.
When we descend the Nahuel Huapi National Park rivers, we visit places
of incomparable beauty, such as the interminable Valdivian forests,
deep canyons of basaltic lava rock and the enormous glacial valleys
that cut through the heart of the Cordillera de los Andes. On each
of these routes, one can observe the many species of flora and fauna
that populate the exciting immensity of Patagonia.
DUCKIES
These are inflatable kayaks enabling beginners to discover the thrills
of the sport. They offer stability, maneuverability and safety, since
they can be easily righted if they overturn, resuming the descent
of the river.
Normally this activity is carried out under the supervision of professional
guides who look out for safety while accompanying the kayakers.
CANYONING
This is a new mode of adventure tourism imported from the Alps. It
is navigating rivers flowing through canyons, that possess pools and
rapids, combining different disciplines such as rafting, climbing
and white water swimming, this last using the body for flotation.
This may include using natural diving pools, walking on pebbles and
Tyrolean and waterfall rappelling.
It is especially exciting because of its variety, but requires certain
precautions and the choice of the right level of descent. During one
of these excursions you walk in rock formations, swim in turbulent
waters, skin dive in natural pools and overcome vertical waterfalls.
The features of our rivers and the beauty of their natural setting
give us the ideal framework to stage this type of adventure.
Places where it is practiced:
- Casa de Piedra Stream
- Manso River
- Cajón del Río Azul (Azul River Ravine)
- "El Cravión"
- El Bolsón
Gear used for this activity: helmet, life jacket, neoprene rubber
suit and harness.
Requirements: being fit and knowing how to swim.
SEA KAYAKING
This activity enables us to discover unique areas of Patagonia and
access the lakes, huge freshwater storage areas for the meltwater
of ancient glaciers. The immensity of this part of the planet offers
a great range of itineraries, and using the kayak opens access to
places not otherwise accessible. Sea Kayaking is a sport of low physical
demands and accessible to all sportsmen.
Excursions:
- Lake Mascardi - Lake Steffen
- Lake Steffen - Villegas River
- Villa Los Coihues (Lake Gutiérrez) - Villa Catedral
- Pérez Rosales Pass - Peulla (Crossing to Chile)

in an original way, they can choose to enter the park in reliable
rain-equipped canoes and, if they wish so, they may also count on
